The Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies is seeking to fill a number of posts to commence in time for the 2010 academic year and is interested in appointing a scholar who can make a major contribution to teaching and research in the field of Arabic Literature and Media. The existing teaching and research interests of the Institute span the Social Sciences and Humanities, and it is hoped that this appointment will offer an exciting opportunity to applicants with initiative and vision who feel they can contribute to the activities of a multi-disciplinary department.
Applications are invited for an appointment in Arabic Literature and Media. We are seeking a scholar with an excellent research publication record or evidence of strong research activities and publication plans. Applicants should have a good first degree or equivalent, and a PhD obtained in a relevant field. A commitment to developing research grant applications both individually and collaboratively, a record of research funding acquisition, evidence of administrative competence, and an ability to attract postgraduate research students will be an advantage, together with a commitment to and experience of delivering high quality undergraduate teaching. The appointee will be expected to play a full and active role in the Institute and shape the interaction between IAIS and other departments in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and other relevant departments across the University. This appointment is part of a broader university-wide commitment to world class research in the study of the Middle East and Islamic World which has seen extensive investment in recent years.
Candidates with interests and expertise in any field of Arabic Literature, including Classical Arabic Literature, the Arabic Novel, the Arabic Short Story, Arabic Poetry and Arabic Media may apply. However, preference may be given to candidates whose research and teaching combine both Arabic literary and media studies, or who can offer teaching in a second Middle Eastern language or a social science.
The successful applicant would undertake teaching and post-graduate supervision in a variety of modules embedded in IAIS and the wider School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Demonstrated ability or potential to work with an interdisciplinary team is essential.
The starting salary will be on Grade F, £31,671 to £35,646 per annum, points 32 to 36, subject to knowledge, skills and experience.
Successful candidates will be based at the university's dedicated Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies located in the Streatham Campus in Exeter.

· analysis and reporting: analysis of conditions of detention, security and other matters
relating to the ICRC's mandate
Selection requirements
· ideal age: 25 to 45
· prepared to accept unaccompanied posting for a 12-month mission
· excellent command of Arabic and English; French an asset
· university education or minimum 2 years of professional experience
· driving licence (for manual transmission vehicles)
· fully conversant with IT tools
